REACTORS AND MIXERS

Title:MIXER FOR LIQUIDS AND SOLIDS

Inventor(s):A. Gent, R. Henry

Disclosure 114 U.S. Patent 5,267,789

A laboratory device for mixing liquids, solids or combinations thereof, particularly viscous liquids and polymeric solids comprising a mixing vessel having therein a substantially cylindrical mixing chamber; a rotor with a cross-section in the shape of a convex-convex lens with outer radii substantially identical to the inner radius of said cylindrical mixing chamber and with longitudinal dimension substantially identical to that of said cylindrical mixing chamber, said rotor variably positionable eccentric to the center of said mixing chamber upon a base having a drive means for the rotor disposed through it; and a lid for tightly sealing the chamber formed by the mixing vessel and the base. The rotor preferably fills from 28% to 100% of the volume of the mixing chamber; most preferably 50% to 75%.The rotor may be helical form along its longitudinal axis.

The essential feature of this mixer is that the axis of rotation of the mixer paddle or stirrer is not fixed with respect to the mixing chamber, it moves all the time. The significant benefits are the instantaneous axis of rotation changes continuously and therefore the mixing paddle or stirrer can sweep out almost all of the chamber and stir the contents efficiently, with no dead spaces.

Title:A NON-FOULING LIQUID NITROGEN COOLED POLYMERIZATION PROCESS AND REACTOR SYSTEM

Inventor(s):J. Kennedy, M. Zsuga

Disclosure 98 U.S. Patent 4,914,166

A non-fouling, economical, liquid-cooled cryogenic polymerization process is disclosed for essentially olefinic monomers. The heat of cooling and polymerization is removed by evaporation of the liquid nitrogen and the nitrogen vapors eliminate the need for moisture traps and drying agents to block the in flow of said moisture.

Advantages of this technology are (1) ideal method of controlling reaction of polymerization process, (2) process avoids hot spots,(3) process allows closer molecular weights to be achieved, (4)polymers do not become plastercized, (5) potential significant energy cost advantage due to use of liquid nitrogen, and (6) range of polymers that can be polymerized range from butyl rubber to pharmaceuticals. This reactor system has been scaled-up to 80 liters without fouling.
